My in-studio guest was multimedia producer Bill Lichtenstein, who was an overnight DJ known as "Little Bill" on Boston's pioneering commercial "FM underground free-form" progressive rock station WBCN during the early to mid-1970s.

Also around that time, Bill was also known as "Captain Steamboat Willie" on WNTN in Newton MA, a suburban Boston AM station that also aired a progressive rock format in the early 1970s. Bill is also an early '70s on-air alumni of WTBS (now WMBR) at MIT in Cambridge MA, and WBRU in Providence, RI during his college years at Brown University in the late 1970s, as well as many years as a national television and radio reporter, correspondent, and program producer.

Bill is making a documentary film about the early years of WBCN as a rock station in the late '60s and early '70s, and about what was going on culturally, musically, and politically in Boston and beyond at that time. Named after WBCN's original "underground" rock format, the film will be called "The American Revolution".

At 12:15 PM we were joined by telephone by journalist, author, and media producer Danny Schechter, known as "The News Dissector" for his outspoken alternative style of radio journalism on WBCN in the late '60s and early '70s.

Just after 12:45 PM we were joined by telephone by Joe Rogers a.k.a "Mississippi Fats" and/or "Mississippi Harold Wilson", the very first on-air DJ when WBCN began playing "free-form" album rock on March 15, 1968. Rogers had previously been a host on MIT college station WTBS, now WMBR.

Just before 1:10 we were joined by telephone by Sam Kopper, WBCN's first long-term rock Program Director from 1968 into the mid-1970s, now programming the "WBCN Free Form Rock" channel available online at http://www.wbcn.com (click the FREE FORM link on the left to listen), or on HD radio in Boston at 100.7 FM HD3. With Sam was Carolyn Fox, a WBCN DJ in the early 1990s, plus many other stations in New England.

Joining the conversation around 1:20 PM was Boston DJ legend Charles Laquidara who joined WBCN in 1969 and became host of his extremely popular morning show "The Big Mattress" until 1996, when he continued hosting mornings on WZLX until retiring in 2000.

Just before 1:40 PM we were joined by telephone by Jim Parry, WBCN nighttime DJ from 1968 through the 1970's.

My in-studio guest was multimedia producer Bill Lichtenstein, who was an overnight DJ known as "Little Bill" on Boston's pioneering commercial "FM underground free-form" progressive rock station WBCN during the early to mid-1970s.

Also around that time, Bill was also known as "Captain Steamboat Willie" on WNTN in Newton MA, a suburban Boston AM station that also aired a progressive rock format in the early 1970s. Bill is also an early '70s on-air alumni of WTBS (now WMBR) at MIT in Cambridge MA, and WBRU in Providence, RI during his college years at Brown University in the late 1970s, as well as many years as a national television and radio reporter, correspondent, and program producer.

Bill is making a documentary film about the early years of WBCN as a rock station in the late '60s and early '70s, and about what was going on culturally, musically, and politically in Boston and beyond at that time. Named after WBCN's original "underground" rock format, the film will be called "The American Revolution".

At 1:00 PM, we were joined by telephone by Boston DJ legend Charles Laquidara who joined WBCN in 1969 and became host of his extremely popular morning show "The Big Mattress" until 1996, when he continued hosting mornings on WZLX until retiring in 2000.

We were also joined by phone with Sam Kopper, WBCN's first long-term rock Program Director from 1968 into the mid-1970s, now programming the "WBCN Free Form Rock" channel available online at http://www.wbcn.com (click the FREE FORM link on the left to listen), or on HD radio in Boston at 100.7 FM HD3. Then, at approximately 1:20, were were joined by phone by former WBCN/WZLX "Big Mattress" show sportscaster "Tank".

Bill Hanley at Woodstock, 1969

The first Woodstock festival took place August 15th through 17th, 1969. Original Woodstock sound engineer Bill Hanley, known as "The Father of Festival Sound", joined host Eli Polonsky live in the studio for a special Woodstock 42nd Anniversary program segment from 12 noon to 1:30 PM EDT!

Bill Hanley's live sound career began with the legendary Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals of the late 1950s, and in the 1960s included The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, Woodstock, The Fillmore East, The Cafe Au-Go-Go in NYC, and many more.

Hanley is a 2006 Parnelli Award winner for innovation in the live event industry, and the subject of an upcoming Oral History Documentary titled "The Last Seat In The House". We spoke with Bill about his entire career, took listener questions, and listened to some of the great music from Woodstock and elsewhere that Bill engineered!

The Rowan Brothers

Lorin Rowan of The Rowan Brothers called in to host Eli Polonsky for a telephone interview shortly at 1:40 PM.

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists Chris and Lorin Rowan were born and raised near Boston, when their brother Peter was making a name for himself in the band Earth Opera. The duo joined David Grisman in San Francisco in the early '70s, and opened for The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West. Their first album "The Rowan Brothers" included Grisman, and the Dead's Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann. They have been performing a mix of bluegrass, folk, and country-rock for 40 years.

The Rowan Brothers were at Johnny D's in Somerville on Tuesday, August 16 and performed their unique "mash-ups" of Beatles songs as "The Day Trippers" plus some old and new originals, and also Friday, August 19 with special guest vocalist Maddie Sifantus at a benefit for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Wakefield, MA performing original and traditional material. Folk-rock singer/songwriter Jonathan Edwards released his first solo album, including the Billboard #4 hit "Sunshine", in 1971, and has since released over 15 albums spanning folk-rock, country-rock and bluegrass styles. Jonathan and his trio performed a benefit concert for the Frank Withey Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, MA on Thursday, August 18. Click here for more info.

At 1:00 PM:
Folk-rock-blues guitarist Danny Kalb began performing with Dave Van Ronk in Greenwich Village, played on albums by Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, and co-founded the band The Blues Project in 1965. Danny made a rare area appearance at Johnny D's in Somerville, MA with the Paul Speidel Band on Friday, August 12.

At 1:40 PM:
Country-rock legend Jerry Jeff Walker has been performing for over 45 years and wrote the often-covered folk/pop standard "Mr. Bojangles" in 1968. He became one of the pioneers of the Texas "outlaw country" scene in the '70s, and has released over two dozen albums. Jerry Jeff performed at Indian Ranch in Webster, MA Saturday, August 13 at 2 PM.
